When we talk about being a son or daughter of God, we’re talking about something truly special—a relationship that can deeply change our lives. The Bible helps us understand this identity, showing us what it means to belong to God’s family and how that affects the way we live.
First, being called a child of God tells us who we are. John in 1John 3:1 wrote, “See what great love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! "
This shows how much God loves us, not just as part of His creation, but as His own children. It’s a very close, loving relationship.
As God’s children, we also receive His promises and are invited to live in His light. Romans 8:14-17 tells us, "“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,’” This means we don’t have to live in fear. Instead, we can feel safe and being guided by God, knowing we belong to Him.
Being part of God’s family also means we should try to live like Him. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). This reminds us that we should live in ways that reflect God’s love by being peaceful, kind, and fair.
Being God’s child comes with a responsibility, to love and serve others. Ephesians 5:1-2 says, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”
We’re called to show the same love and care to others that Jesus showed to us.
